"Do I Have to Get My Split Ends Cut?"

Q: I want to let my hair grow longer but the ends are really damaged and split. Do I have to get it cut?

A: Unfortunately, you have to trim it to grow it. "If you wait more than five weeks between trims, you'll get bigger split ends and wind up having to cut off more in the long run," says Laurent D., owner of NYC and L.A. PrivĂ© Salons, who's clipped the coifs of Gwyneth Paltrow and Denise Richards. Make it clear that you want the minimum amount taken off — about a quarter of an inch, just enough to make your mane healthy. Between regular trims, keep your hair as strong as possible with a weekly deep conditioner or mask. Try Laurent D. Salon PrivĂ© Herbal Blend #26. For daily use, you'll want both a shampoo and a conditioner formulated for damaged locks — pick ones that contain nourishing natural-plant extracts. Try Aveda Sap Moss Shampoo and Conditioning Detangler, $12 each. Some styling suggestions to keep you splitproof: Never use a plastic-bristle brush, which frays strands easily. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb when hair is wet and a natural-bristle brush when dry. If you blow-dry, use a low-heat setting. If you towel-dry, do it delicately — vigorous rubbing will ravage ends.?
